That usually means attic air sealing, enough insulation, and balanced intake plus exhaust so cool outside air can wash the underside of the deck. Ridge vents alone don’t work if the attic can’t pull fresh air in at the eaves. We also clear soffit baffles, clean gutters before big snows, add ice-and-water shield at the eaves on every reroof, and use heat cables only as a backup when they make sense — not a substitute for a cold deck.
A lot of older Twin Cities and Minneapolis–St. Paul homes were built with zero eaves, closed fascia, or no soffits. Traditional soffit intake won’t go there. No. Insulation alone is not enough. Insulation slows heat, but without air sealing and real intake/exhaust, warm air still collects under the deck. They have to work together.
After thaw we do a spring inspection: shingles, gutters, decking, and flashing. Ice can lift edges and yank gutters — we fix weak spots before spring rain finds them.
